Lucid Signing vs DocuSign

DocuSign is the category. It is also priced in dollars and metered by envelope, which is a different shape of product from the one a South African business usually needs.

What each one is for

DocuSign is the largest e-signature company in the world and has been the default answer for two decades. Its product reaches a long way past signing - identity verification, contract lifecycle management, deep integrations with systems most small businesses do not run.

Its self-serve plans are priced in US dollars and include an envelope allowance: a cap on how many documents you may send in a period, with the cheapest plan capped tightly. Going over means upgrading, not paying a little more.

Lucid Signing is narrower on purpose. It sends documents for signature, records what happened in a tamper-evident trail, and charges a fixed rand amount for as many documents as you like. If what you need is signing rather than a contract platform, the narrower product is usually the cheaper and simpler one.

Choose DocuSign if

  • You need contract lifecycle management, not only signature capture - clause libraries, negotiation, renewals, obligations tracking.
  • Your counterparties or your compliance team specifically require DocuSign, which happens in enterprise procurement more often than anyone admits.
  • You need integrations with systems we do not touch, or identity verification products beyond an audit trail.
  • You operate mainly outside South Africa, where being billed in dollars is an advantage rather than a cost.

Choose Lucid Signing if

  • You want the price on the page to be the amount that leaves your account, with no exchange rate and no cross-border card fee.
  • You send an unpredictable number of documents and do not want to think about an envelope counter.
  • You want invoices with your South African company details on them, and support in your time zone.
  • You want a tool your signers can use on a phone without an account, and nothing more complicated than that.
